Wernicke encephalopathy is characterized by an acute manifestation of ataxia, ophthalmoparesis and an apathetic- confusional state resulting from thiamine deficiency. 80% of surviving patients develop an amnestic (Korsakoff) syndrome with memory impairment and confabulation

چکیده

Aims: To investigate a possible relationship between cerebellar glucose metabolism and recovery from ataxia in the first months of acute Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome. Methods: Two cases of alcoholic Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome were followed up with the clinical status and cerebral glucose metabolism over a 4and 9-month period. Results: Initially both patients showed severe ataxia and elevated cerebellar glucose metabolism that decreased corresponding to the restitution of stance and gait. Conclusion: Increased cerebellar glucose metabolism at the onset of the illness may reflect the reorganization process of disturbed motor skills and may indicate cerebellar plasticity. Anorexia nervosa and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome: a case report

INTRODUCTION Wernicke's encephalopathy is an acute, potentially fatal, neuropsychiatric syndrome resulting from thiamine deficiency. The disorder is still greatly under-diagnosed, and failure to promptly identify and adequately treat the condition can lead to death or to the chronic form of the encephalopathy - Korsakoff's syndrome. Wernicke's encephalopathy has traditionally been associated wi...

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is a manifestation of thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency, usually secondary to alcohol abuse, although there other non-alcohol related causes, such as bariatric surgery, and extreme dietary restriction. The syndrome is a combined manifestation of the short-lived but acute Wernicke’s encephalopathy (WE), followed by chronic Korsakoff syndrome. It is generally accepted t...

Wernicke's Encephalopathy: An Unusual Consequence of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome—Case Report and Literature Review

Introduction. Wernicke's encephalopathy is a well-described syndrome characterized by the classic triad of confusion, ataxia, and ophthalmoplegia. Wernicke's encephalopathy results from thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. Common causes include alcoholism and gastric disorders. Wernicke's has been described in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS); however, given these patients'...

Background: ″Wernicke’s Korsakoff″ syndrome is the most important complication of severe thiamine deficiency. The term refers to two different syndromes, each representing a different stage of the disease. Wernicke’s encephalopathy (WE) is an acute syndrome requiring emergent treatment to prevent death and neurologic morbidity. Korsakoff syndrome (KS) refers to a chronic neurologic condition th...

Wernicke-Korsakoff encephalopathy and the endorphin system.

Sir, We read with interest the recent paper of Gibb et al. (1985) in which reversible coma in Wernicke's encephalopathy was reported. Treatment with thiamine was successful in that the patient regained consciousness but unsuccessful in preventing the residual amnestic defect of Korsakoff's encephalopathy. In a similar report (Wallis et al., 1978) four comatose patients with the Wernicke syndrom...
